Points didn’t
come easy for the Waterloo High School boys’ basketball
team in their
second round home regional game Wednesday. The Bulldogs fell to Althoff Catholic
High School 91-42. WHS ended the season with a record of 11-20.
The Columbia
Junior High School volleyball team
traveled to the Waterloo gym Thursday evening and defeated the Junior Bulldogs
in two straight games.
The Columbia hockey club lost a tough third and deciding game Feb. 28 in the Division 1A Championship Series to Bethalto, 4-3. Bethalto scored three goals in the third period to come away with title. Columbia finished the year 19-4-1, and the future does look bright as the current team will only a couple lose players to graduation.
Waterloo Band Parents Variety Show is Saturday, March 13, at the New Waterloo High School Auditorium. The curtain rises at 7 p.m. Talent of all ages from the community will perform a variety of acts, including vocals, bands, dancing, instrumentals and martial arts. Tickets, which include a gourmet dessert, are $8 for adults and $5 for students. For more information, call Tom Schrieber at 939-6555.

Benefit Dance Friday Night To Benefit Earthquake Relief Benefit: Aftershock will be playing tonight, Friday, March 5, from 8 p.m. to midnight. Admission is $5 and proceeds will be donated to the Haiti earthquake relief. There will be 50/50 drawings, raffle prizes and a cash bar.

Volunteer Fire Department was called out Thursday
to put
out a small fire in the woods along Summit View Road off of Mule Road on the
north end of Columbia.
Waterloo Man Recovering Following Friday Morning Rollover
Rich
Hardgraves of Waterloo is the man who was injured Friday morning in the
accident on Route 3 on the north end of Columbia. He was flown by Arch
helicopter to St. Louis University for a badly injured leg. According to the
Columbia Police Department, Hardgraves, 57, was driving his 1991 Pontiac Grand
Am southbound on Route 3 when he sideswiped a 2003 Nissan driven by Glennon
Thebeau of St. Louis. Initially, it appears Hardgraves’ car then to begin to go
down a grass embankment near the Quarry Road exit. The driver apparently turned
his steering wheel left and hit the back side of a guard rail causing the car to
overturn, trapping Hardgraves inside. Columbia and Dupo firefighters used Jaws
of Life equipment to assist Columbia Ambulance Service personnel extricate him.
Thebeau, 60, was not injured. The Columbia Police Department is continuing their
investigation into the exact cause of the accident.
Backstoppers Trivia Night Is A Sell-Out: Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy Larry Gardner is reporting that this Saturday’s Backstoppers Trivia Night at the Heckerdome is a sell-out. “We will not have any tables available for walk-ins,” reports Gardner. “Again, we are very grateful to the public support we get for this event every year.”
Maeystown’s annual Spring Art Show is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, March 13 and 14, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The 2010 show will feature five area artists displaying their works at the village’s Rock Mill and in the ballroom of the Corner George Inn Bed and Breakfast. The free event is sponsored by Historic Maeystown and there is no admission charge. The artists are Maeystown Postmaster Annette DeBourge of Waterloo, Mitzi Nitzsche of Sparta, Fanny Sue Schellhardt of Maeystown, Caroline Gilster Wylie of Chester and Mildred Young of Chester. This will be the second time DeBourge is displaying her work at the art show. She works in oil and mixed media, and concentrates primarily on portraits. Many local folks know Schellhardt as a teacher in the Waterloo School District for 34 years. Since retiring, Fanny Sue has taken classes in pastel, oil and watercolor. Marketing challenges for small beef herds program will be held Monday, March 8, 7:30 p.m., at the Monroe County Annex Building in Waterloo. Dr. Teresa Steckler, U of I Extension Beef Specialist will be the guest speaker. The program is sponsored by the Monroe County Cattlemen’s Association.
Calen Schaefer, formerly of Maeystown, has accepted a job as the event technology supervisor at the Minneapolis City Center Marriott. He has held this same position at the Seattle Marriott Waterfront for the last year and a half. His girlfriend Megan will join him in June and has been accepted into in a Master’s Degree program at the University of Minnesota. Both sets of parents are happy they are closer to home.
Recent Obituaries Charlotte J. Wolf (nee Bearce), 80, of Waterloo, died March 2, 2010 in Waterloo. She was born March 3, 1929, the daughter of the Walter Carl and Maude (nee Smith) Bearce. Mrs. Wolf is survived by her sons Russel (Debbie) Wolf and Renard Wolf; and grandchildren Emily (Birton) Cowden, Jonathan Wolf and Amanda Wolf; step-grandchildren Amy (Nathan) Strong, Eric (Sarah) Beck, Denny Hall and Jenna Hall. She was preceded in death by a brother and sisters. Mrs. Wolf was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and a 40-year member of the Retired Teachers Association. Funeral procession with leave Quernheim Funeral Home on Monday, March 8 at 10:30 a. m. for an 11 a.m. graveside service at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis – Pastor Darrell Jones officiating. Memorials may be made to the Whispering Pines Alzheimer’s Unit of Oak Hill in Waterloo. Donald William Kunz, 83, of Millstadt, died March 4, 2010 at Memorial Hospital in Belleville. He was born April 6, 1926 in St. Louis, the son of the late Oliver and Martha (nee Jones) Kunz. Mr. Kunz is survived by his daughters Donna Maybery, Cheryl Gregowicz and Connie Durham; son, Jeffrey Kunz; grandchildren Danny, Rickey, Paul, Stephanie, Nicholas and Ciara; and a brother, Raymond Kunz; along with six great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria (nee Gutridge) Kunz. Mr. Kunz was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, was a member of the Dupo VFW Post and retired from Peabody Coal. Visitation is Monday, March 8, from 9 a.m. to 11 a. m. at Strauss-Leesman Funeral Home in Millstadt. A funeral will immediately with Rev. Matt Fritz officiating. Mr. Kunz will be buried with full military honors at the St. Paul Church Yard Cemetery in St. Louis with full military honors. Eugene E. Goeddel, 92, of Waterloo, died March 4, 2010 in St. Louis. He was born Sept. 14, 1917 in Waterloo, the son of the late Edward and Mary (nee Kraft) Goeddel. Mr. Goeddel is survived by his children Jean Ann (Michael) Davison, David (Lynn) Goeddel and Lee (Sharon) Goeddel; grandchildren Elise (Steven) Horvath, Toni (Joshua) Hogan, Noel (Beth) Goeddel and Gerilyn Goeddel; great-grandchildren Greyson and Chase Horvath, Ethan and Cannon Hogan and Lucy and Violet Goeddel; and a sister, Edna M. Mueller; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucina (nee Hellmer) Goeddel; and a sister, Lavina Mathews. Mr. Goeddel attended St. Paul UCC in Waterloo and was employed with the Teamsters Union. He was formerly employed at the Waterloo Milk Co. Craig Earl Oder, 49, of Columbia Mo., died February 24, 2010 in Rolla, Mo. He was born Nov. 15, 1960 in East Saint Louis, the son of the late Donald and Marilyn (nee Herbert) Oder. Mr. Oder is survived by a brother, William (Elda) Oder of Easly SC; sister, Renae (Tony) Mayer of Waterloo; special friend, Alana Johnson; daughters Kandice and Katrina Gatewood; grandchildren Jonathan Ehler and Kayelyn Gatewood Kimbrough; and friends Linda, Mike, David and Steven Wallerstein. Michael Lee Cotton, 47, of Dupo, died March 2, 2010 at Kenneth Hall Regional Hospital in East St. Louis. He was born April 4, 1962 in Normandy, Mo., the son of Mary Cotton and the late Lee Ray Cotton. In addition to his mother, Mr. Cotton is survived by his wife, Chassidi (nee Martin) Cotton; children Courtney Smith, Jason Smith, Austin Smith, Kayleigh Smith and Kelly Smith; brothers Edward Cotton and Dale (Billie) Cotton; a sister, Michele (Bill) Watts; uncles William (Sue) Cotton and Ronnie (Judy)Cotton; nephew, Nicholas Cotton; and niece, Lilly Watts; along with cousins, other relatives and friends. Besides his father, he was a store manager for Ace Hardware in Granite City. He was a member of the American Legion and Moose Lodge.
